Eating Healthy during Pregnancy

Eating a variety of healthy foods will help you get the nutrients your baby need. Much like the rest of the body, our teeth also need healthy foods to stay in good health.

Avoid foods that are high in sugar and sticky in texture like candies and other sweet treats. These foods can increase the risk of tooth decay. Instead, choose nutritious foods that are low in sugar, such as fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, whole grains, and low fat dairy products.

Snacking

The number of times we eat in a day also plays a factor to our risk of tooth decay. It is important to limit opportunities you provide for sugars found in our food to break down your tooth surfaces and cause tooth decay.

Try to limit snacks to no more than three times per day and rinse your mouth each time to clear food off from your teeth. When snacking, choose healthier options like unsalted and unsweetened foods, fruits, nuts, seeds etc.

Drink Water during Pregnancy

It is important to drink water during pregnancy. Water helps your body absorb essential nutrients and carry vitamins and minerals to your cells that reach your baby. Stay well-hydrated by drinking at least 10 cups (8 oz. cups) of water every day. Water also helps to clean your mouth with every sip by washing away leftover food and sugar.

Choose safe tap water over bottled water. Your tap water might contain a mineral called fluoride which helps prevent tooth decay. You can learn more about your city’s tap water safety and fluoride facts by calling your local water board at 951.782.4130 or visiting the California Waterboard website.  The intake of fluoridated water is also important for the development of your soon-to-be-baby’s teeth.
